As the 2024 transfer window closes, Premier League clubs have shattered records with a combined spend of over £1.96bn. This figure dwarfs the spending in other major leagues, with Italy’s Serie A coming in a distant second. Eight clubs set new personal transfer records, underlining the financial power at play in England’s top flight.

Chelsea and Brighton were two of the biggest spenders, with Chelsea continuing their aggressive strategy under Todd Boehly and Brighton breaking their club record with signings like Georginio Rutter. Meanwhile, Manchester City, despite being the reigning champions, turned in a profit of £115.8m, showcasing a shrewd approach to the market.

Promoted sides Ipswich, Southampton, and Leicester also made significant investments, spending nearly £300m combined to strengthen their squads for Premier League survival.

Transfer deadline day was packed with drama, highlighted by Jadon Sancho’s move to Chelsea and Ivan Toney’s switch to the Saudi Pro League. Manchester United made the biggest splash with the £50.5m signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG, while Chelsea’s last-minute attempts to secure Victor Osimhen from Napoli fell through.

In a notable move outside the Premier League, Birmingham City made history in League One by signing Fulham’s Jay Stansfield for a record-breaking £10m, pushing their total spending to an unprecedented level for the division.
