In an electrifying performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo secured the gold medal in men’s speed climbing, breaking the Asian record with a blistering time of 4.75 seconds. Leonardo’s incredible climb edged out China’s Wu Peng, who finished just behind with a time of 4.77 seconds to claim the silver.
This victory marks Indonesia’s first gold medal at this year’s Olympics, a historic achievement for the nation. The excitement didn’t end there, as American climber Sam Watson claimed the bronze with a world-record-breaking time of 4.74 seconds in the bronze medal match, surpassing his own previous record.
Watson’s journey to the podium was a rollercoaster. After breaking his own world record with a time of 4.75 seconds in the quarterfinals, he faced a tough semifinal match against Wu Peng, where he clocked 4.93 seconds and missed out on the final. However, Watson bounced back in the bronze medal match, defeating Iran’s Reza Alipour to secure his place on the podium.
In the women’s speed climbing event, Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw set a new world record with a time of 6.10 seconds to win gold. China’s Deng Lijuan also made history, finishing with a time of 6.18 seconds to break the Asian record and earn China’s first-ever Olympic climbing medal.
