In a stunning display of resilience, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has advanced to the semifinals in the womenโs 66kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing at least a bronze medal for her country. Despite facing intense public scrutiny due to a gender controversy, Khelif has remained focused on her goal, aiming to turn this hard-won medal into gold.
Khelif, 25, earned her spot in the semifinals after defeating her Hungarian opponent in the quarterfinals on Saturday. This victory marks Algeriaโs first Olympic boxing medal since 2000, a significant achievement for the nation.
Imane Khelif is one of two boxers who were disqualified from last yearโs Womenโs World Championships due to failing testosterone and gender eligibility tests but were allowed to compete in the Olympics. The other athlete is Lin Yu-ting, representing Chinese Taipei.
In an interview with Algerian national television, Khelif expressed her determination to bring home the gold: โWinning at the Olympics is never easy, but Iโm fully prepared for the upcoming challenges. Iโm proud of myself and my country. I fight for my flag and the sport I love deeply. I hope to inspire the next generation by winning Algeriaโs first-ever Olympic gold in womenโs boxing.โ
Khelif also dedicated her victory to the late boxer Mustapha Moussa, Algeriaโs first Olympic boxing medalist, who passed away on Saturday.
